How to Enhance Your Home Interior With a Fireplace

Saturday, November 28th, 2009

With the enormous and ever increasing variety of fireplaces available today, homeowners are spoilt for choice when selecting fires for interior living spaces, whether restoring period features or creating a classic style in a modern house. Maintaining its position as the centrepiece in many homes, fireplaces have continued their popularity throughout the ages and both modern and traditional designs, in a range of finishes, play an ever important part in combining cosy warmth with style and eye appeal.

Assembly of a traditional wooden fireplace

Most wooden fire surrounds are made up of three components – Two legs and a mantel shelf. Before starting assembly, it is good practice to observe the following precautions:

        1. Read through the manufacturers instructions.
        2. Fit the surround on a soft surface to avoid damaging the surround or your floor.
        3. When drilling into the wall, check for hidden pipes or cables in order to avoid them.

Finishing your Surround

Deciding the colour of a fireplace surround to match your home is a choice of two finishing techniques:

        1. Paint finish
        2. Stain/Varnish finish

Which ever technique you employ be sure to paint the back and front of the fire surround to increase stability.

Back Panels and Hearths to complete the Fireplace

To make your fireplace complete you can use reversible Laminate back panel and hearth tray insert suitable for use with most gas and electric installation and widely available through a range of DIY stores.

Most laminate back panels are formed from a core of craft paper mixed with heat resistant resins to which a decorative finish laminate is applied during the manufacturing process. Suitable hearth trays should contain non-combustible board and be of a construction which raises the edge of the hearth to 50mm from floor level and projects a minimum of 300mm from the flame source.

The back panel will require an opening to be cut to accommodate the appliance used. Once marked up the laminate can be easily cut with a fine toothed saw.

There are a number of ways to secure the back panel in place, but one of the most effective is to drill a series of slightly oversized holes where the panel meets the inside of the leg of the surround. These can then be used to screw through to the surround with a short wood screw, the oversized hole allowing for a small degree of movement which may occur over time in the installation and prevent the possibility of laminate surface from cracking.

Generally the hearths come as a single unit which needs to be laid on a sand and cement mortar bed to enable the hearth to be levelled in both directions this is essential to ensure your fireplace is also level and upright.

Alternative Back Panels and Hearths

Other options of back panels and hearth sets are available on the market such as, cast iron, lightweight marble, granite or solid marble in one or three pieces. Again the back panel is fitted in a similar way to the laminate back panel but does not require to be fixed to the surround but is freestanding.

Tips to Home Interior Design and Decorating Ideas

Wednesday, November 25th, 2009

It may seem rather intimidating to think about decorating your own home. Lots of people just live with things the way they find are. Others get the help of professionals, since they have no clue what they like or what approach to take!

Your home is your personal space. If you need help ask for suggestions, browse through interior design journals or online for inspiration! However, when the time comes to make decisions, they should be yours and your family’s. It’s your home and you should feel comfortable with the choices as you are the one who has to live with the choices!

Take a focal point in your room or the natural pathways. An example of this could be an ornate fire place, architectural features or placement of windows. Make this your starting point and start to design from one of these,

Choose your fabric, flooring and upholstery first, not the paint that you will use on the walls. You can always have paint mixed in any colour to compliment or match your soft furnishings when the time comes.

Don’t try to make things match, this is rarely effective! It is far better to have different textures, patterns such as floral and stripes which will add interest and style to the room.

Try not too make the room look too fussy by covering every surface with your treasures! Select the loves you love the most give them space to be viewed and enjoyed!

Determine which style of window treatments would be most practical and fit in with your design theme. The most common window treatments are blinds such as vertical blinds, or Venetian or traditional styled curtains used on their own or in combination with a blind. Choose the window dressing carefully as they do far more then just dress a window, they give you privacy, light, and insulation. As such they should always be an integral part of the design scheme not left as an after thought!

If you have thread bare carpets you have some great choices! Probably the most cost effective is to buy cheap rugs and cover the ‘bald’ bits! However, this is only a short term measure. Either replace the carpet or opt for the latest design trends and have stripped floor boards if you have wooden floors. The most cost effective way would be to strip the boards yourself, but this can be very time consuming, particularly if the boards are not in very good order or have layers of varnish to remove, in which case it may be advisable to obtain professional advice.

If you live in a modern style home which has concrete floors wood effect laminate floor is worth considering. The cheap rugs you brought can still be used on either of these floor surfaces as they will still coordinate with your soft furnishings.

If your furniture is mismatched or maybe you have inherited it, try to find a way of tying it all in with your room. By adding throws or cushions in coordinating fabric or painting the wood on some pieces of furniture, can achieve the desired effect you want.

How To Select The Right Paint Color For Your Home Interior Project

Thursday, October 29th, 2009

It looks so simple and easy when you are watching a home improvement program on television. A home makeover project is in progress and the decision is made to do some interior painting. Then, just like magic, there is a beautiful new color on the walls of the room. Everyone is smiling, the room looks great, and gosh, it only took a couple of seconds for the transformation!

Things like this only happen on television or to other people, not to you. I know, my life is never that simple or easy, either. However, selecting a paint color for an interior room or space in your home doesn’t have to be an agonizing process. There are some steps you can take to help you make a good decision when selecting a wall color and, therefore, become one of those happy, smiling people when the project is complete.

There are two decisions you have to make before heading over to the paint store to pick up color swatches. First, determine the scope of your project, which means that you need to decide if you are going to paint one room, two rooms and a hallway, the entire Great Room, and so on. It seems so simple as to be obvious, but don’t assume, just go ahead and make the decision mentally or write it down in a notebook.

The second part of that question is this: Does your space have defined ’starting and stopping points’? To answer this question, go into the area and literally look at all of the walls in question. You want to make sure you don’t have a wall flowing into another space that is outside the scope of your project. For example, I have seen a kitchen/nook area of a home where the kitchen walls were painted a different color than the nook. That’s fine, except the homeowner just stopped with one color in the middle of the wall above the cabinets, so there was definitely something unfinished about the look of the area! Don’t make that mistake. Look carefully at each wall in the area, also considering any fascia or soffits you may have.

The other decision you should make is regarding the budget. How much money do you want to, or are you able to, spend on the paint decorating project? Again, it seems so simple. But before you run out and buy the paint, you should decide:

1. What brand of paint am I going to use? Some brands and types of paint are more costly than others. Is your project area large? Then you will need more paint. If you might be covering a dark paint with a lighter color, you will need two coats of paint and possibly a primer.

2. Who is going to do the painting? If you are going to hire out the project, it makes sense to get some estimates before spending any money.

3. How many colors of paint will be used in the project? Are you going to have an accent wall or area? Are you going to faux finish any of the space? Try to determine an overall plan at this point.

Once you have decided the scope of the project and a realistic budget, it is then time to think about actual paint colors. Following are some suggestions for you to consider when selecting a wall color.

How do you want to change the look of the room or space? Do you want to add some drama to the area? Look at some deeper or brighter shades of colors. Or, a more subtle and neutral look might be more in your design comfort zone. In that case, keep the colors more neutral; consider one of the hundreds of shades of off-whites. Remember that a paint chip is a teeny, tiny little piece of color. It looks more intense when you put it on your very large walls. You might want to start with a shade that is less intense on the paint chip and test how it will appear on the walls. We’ll talk more about that soon.

Are you going to work with an existing color in the area or introduce a new color? If you are thinking about a new and different color, make sure it will enhance the color scheme that is currently in the room. Your furniture and accessories should have new life and interest with the addition of a new color. Another great technique is to work with an existing color in the room and play it up on the walls by selecting a lighter or darker shade of that color.

It is always a wise decision to test your potential color choices before painting the entire room. Purchase paint samples if possible, or a quart if necessary, and prepare a color board. It’s very simple. Just take a white poster board and put two coats of paint on it. You’ll then have a good idea of the actual color. Put the color board in all areas of the room over a 24 to 48 hour period by taping it to the wall with masking/painting tape. You want to see the color at different times of the day, and in the evening with artificial light.

Following these simple steps will help ensure that you select a color you’ll be happy with in your space, and minimize stress and frustration because you’ve made the important decisions at the beginning of the project. That’s how to complete your paint project with a smile!

Home Interior Decoration For Nurseries

Wednesday, October 14th, 2009

The arrival of a baby brings happiness and joy to everyone in the family. It’s an exciting time! By the addition of the new family member means that space has to be found for a nursery. And once that space is found, what is the nursery going to look like? Here are some important steps to consider on decorating your baby’s nursery.

Of course, the gender of the baby will probably greatly influence the colors being used in the room, and so if you don’t know what the gender will be it may be best to start off with very neutral colors at first, especially on the walls, and then you can add the appropriate color accessories later on. Just don’t put off painting the room very long, as you want to make sure that all noxious fumes are totally cleared out by the time the baby is at home and using the nursery. In fact, the safety of the baby should be the first consideration at all times, so keep this in mind as you make every choice regarding your nursery decoration designs.

In years past, it was traditional to simply use blue as the predominant color for boys and pink for girls. But the good news is that such strict adherence to certain colors is not much in use in nursery designs these days. Instead, you can mix and match other colors as well and not be considered as breaking any design rules. So there’s no reason to limit the colors that are used in your baby’s nursery simply because of old traditions. Instead, simply strive to achieve a color combination that promotes joy and calm, and it will no doubt be just what your baby needs.

A very common practice these days in nursery design is to use stenciling. You can find a wide array and selection of stencil designs at your local crafting store. These can be used to create imaginative borders that go around your nursery ceiling or mid-level on the wall. Some of the designs can even get very intricate and involved, so it’s a good idea to determine in advance how much time and effort you have to be able to put into it to get the job done in time. Remember, sometimes simple is better, especially if it keeps your stress level down before the baby’s arrival.

After your walls are all done, it’s time to decide what furniture will go into the room. Many folks have heirloom baby furniture that has been handed down from generation to generation. And of course, there will be a strong sentimental pull for using this kind of baby furniture. But before you do, just be sure that all safety requirements are met by each item. Years ago, safety was not given the priority that it is today in the design of baby furniture. So it’s a good idea to make a comparison between your heirloom furniture and modern furniture to see if they still do use the same basic design qualities for safety in mind. If not, use the heirloom furniture for show, and purchase modern, safe baby furniture for everyday use. Another consideration when using heirloom furniture is to be sure to protect it while it is being used. If it is a highly prized, sentimental piece, you will want to be able to pass it on to future generations as well. So take good care of it in the meantime.

Baby accessories often provide the finishing touches on a beautiful nursery. But never let appearance win out over function. Most parents quickly discover that very practical items such as diaper holders, changing tables, and so forth are much more appreciated over the long haul then are a bunch of stuffed animals and ceramics that really don’t accomplish much other than just looking nice. After you have all the necessary and usable accessories in the room, then you can think about adding the decorative items afterward.

Decorating your baby’s nursery can be a fun, exciting experience for everyone in the family. And hopefully the suggestions in this article will help you along in your decoration efforts.
